Good Friday – 29 March 2024
Good Friday is observed during the holy week, which commences with Palm Sunday in remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Good Friday occurs on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, which is based on the Julian Calendar. In 2024, Good Friday will be observed on the 29th of March.
From the early time of Christianity, the day has been a time of sorrow, penance and fasting. Devotees observe fasting and go to churches to offer respect to Jesus Christ. This is not a day of celebration but a day to gather, remember and honour the sacrifice Jesus made for the sake of the whole of mankind.
Diverse customs and practices mark this solemn day across different regions. It is the only day of the year when masses are not said, and candles are not lit. In order to mark the mourning for Jesus, people wear black clothes and cover all pictures, crosses, and other religious icons.
The Catholics attend the churches and relive fourteen stations- the places around the church that mark the final journey of Jesus. In some regions, Good Friday services last three hours, starting at noon—the time when Jesus was believed to be crucified. The lights in churches gradually dim until they’re extinguished, symbolizing the earthquake at Jesus’ death. Processions, hymns, and open-air plays are also done to commemorate his sacrifice.
This is a day to honour the one who bore the burdens of the whole of humanity. May this day be a time of solemn reflection for all who observe it.
