Hanuman Jayanti is among the most celebrated Hindu festivals that commemorates the birth of Anjaneya, Lord Hanuman, the divine vanara who is an embodiment of pure devotion and loyalty in his service to Lord Ram. Hanuman was born on the Shukla Paksha Poornima of the Hindu Chaitra month. This year, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on April 23rd, 2024 in India.

Story of the Birth of Lord Hanuman

Hanuman, also known as Pawan Putra, Anjaneya, Maruti, is born to Anjana, the vanara Queen of King Kesari. However, there are different versions of the birth of Lord Hanuman as described in different Purans:

According to Anandaramayan and Bhavartharamayan, King Dasaratha was given a divine pudding by a deity after having successfully performed the Puthreshti Yagna. As the three Queens of King Dasaratha savored the pudding, it helped them conceive an heir, thus giving birth to four legendary warriors, among whom Lord Ram was born as the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to the scriptures, it is known that a hawk carried away a portion of the remaining pudding in its talons to Queen Anjana, a steadfast devotee of Lord Shiva. As she devoured the pudding, she was blessed with a healthy son. And thus, Lord Hanuman was born.

Lord Hanuman was born on Chaitra Shukla Paksha Poornima

As per the legend in Bhavishya Puran, graced with the blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Vayudev was born Lord Hanuman to King Kesari and Queen Anjana.

According to Parashara Samhita, Shiva and Parvati strolled down a forest fringed with beautiful lakes. On their way, they crossed a couple of monkeys intimate with each other. Parvati gazed at the apes in awe, and threw a glance of passion and intimacy at Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, having realized her desires, took the form of a Vanar along with Parvati. They grew intimate with each other until their union conceived a powerful energy. To bear this power seemed impossible even to the mighty Agni Dev, or Lord of Fire, that he let it out in the air. It is known that Lord Vayudev, the Lord of Wind, carried this power to Queen Anjana, a pious woman who deeply desired for a child. Lord Vayudev disguised the power in the form of a fruit, which he gave Queen Anjana out of affection. She was pregnant with a child soon after she consumed the fruit. And thus, Hanuman was born.

Devotees honor and celebrate the deeds of the mighty warrior of Lord Hanuman as they chant and sing verses from Hanuman Chalisa. Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn authored by Tulsidas in praise of Lord Hanuman.

Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Maruti, Lord Hanuman

The birth of Lord Hanuman is celebrated on different dates in different states in India:

• In the state of Karnataka, hanuman Jayanti is celebrated as Hanuman Vratam, and is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi of the Margashirsha month.
• In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, it is observed on Margashirsha Amavasya, which falls in the months of December or January.
• In Andhra Pradesh, it is said that the festival and its subsidiary prayers take place for about 41 days. The festival begins on the day of Chaitra Purnima and finally closes on the tenth day of Krishna Paksha of the month of Vaishakha.
