The Volkswagen XL1 concept was showcased at the Motor show in Qatar in 2011, at the Auto Expo in Delhi in 2012 and the Geneva Motor Show in 2013. However, no official launch date of this car is forthcoming. It is going to be the most fuel efficient car in the world offering an unbelievable mileage of 111 kmpl. Volkswagen will reportedly produce only 100 copies of this car.

The Volkswagen XL1 is commonly known as the one liter car because of its one liter engine. It is available in one variety only. The car is powered by a 0.8 liter two cylinder TDi engine. It generates a maximum power of 48 HP. This is combined with an electric motor powered by a lithium ion battery. It delivers a maximum power of 27 HP. The engine delivers a peak torque of 140 Nm. The engine is harnessed to a seven speed dual clutch transmission. The car delivers an impressive mileage of 111 kmpl and it can run for a maximum of 35 kilometers on electric power alone without emitting any carbon dioxide. The car takes 11.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph and has a top speed of 160.93 kmph. It emits only 24 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer. This plug in hybrid car can be easily charged from any traditional electrical outlet.

Exterior
The company has used groundbreaking technology to construct a lightweight car which makes the astonishing mileage possible. The construction rev0olves round one piece monocell RTM carbon fiber tub. Carbon fiber has been liberally used all over this car to reduce weight. It is present in the panels, the seats etc. lightweight dampers and magnesium wheels complete the picture. The car weighs only 795 kilograms. This has helped in attaining the great fuel efficiency. The car has a very sleek and futuristic look. The front is dominated by a traditional radiator grille flanked by LED headlamps. The car has a low seating stance. The gull wing style doors fixed at two points appear very stylish. The rear wheels are well covered to reduce air turbulence.
Interior
The Volkswagen XL1 is a two seater car where the passenger seat is placed slightly behind the driver seat. The seats too are made of carbon reinforced polymer to reduce weight while the dash is made of chopped wood fiber. The interior is sophisticated and comfortable and the car has all the attachments necessary for a comfortable ride.
Features and specifications
The Volkswagen XL1 has been developed with the aim of achieving the maximum mileage possible. The car is so light that it can even be manipulated easily without the power steering. Ceramic disc brakes are provided. The aluminum double wishbone suspension at the front and semi trailing link rear suspension allow a comfortable ride. Air conditioner will be present in the car. Apart from these, the company has not yet revealed the other features that will be present in this one liter car.
