MAZAR-I-SHARIF, April 23, 2018 (Xinhua) -- Students read books at a library in Mazar-i-Sharif, capital of Balkh Province in north Afghanistan, ahead of the World Book Day, April 21, 2018. April 23 marks the World Book Day, the celebration of books and book reading worldwide.

The international Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) is an international educational foundation with its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. A group of teachers at the international school of Geneva created the International School Examinations Syndicate (ISES) which later became the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). At present, the IB Programme has grown into four pogrammes - the IB Primary Year Programme for student aged 3 to 12,the Middle Years Programme for 11 to 16 year olds, the challenging IB Diploma Programme with final examination for 16- 19 year olds.

History

The IBO set up its headquarters in Geneva in 1968 for the development and maintenance of the IB diploma programme providing international qualification for university admission. The IB Middle Years programme was developed in the mid 1990s and the IB primary Years Programme was piloted in 1996 in thirty primary schools in different continents. The newest course offered is the IB career-Related Certificate for students aged 16 to 19. The IBO works with more than 3690 schools in 147 countries worldwide offering four challenging programes to students aged 3 to 19 years.

IB Governance

The IBO is divided into three regional centres- IB Africa, Europe and Middle East (IBAEM), IB Americas (IBA) and IB Asia-Pacific (IBAP). The IB administration comprises the IB board of Governors and six committees. The Board of Governors appoints the Director General and sets the strategic direction of the organization and 15 to 25 members form the Board of governors.

Academics

IB world schools are authorized by the IBO to choose o offer only one programme, more than one programme or local or national programmes in addition to one or more IB programmes. The Primary and Middle Years Programmes can be taught in any language, but The Diploma Programme has to be taught in English, French or Spanish.

PYP

The PYP for 3-12 year olds focuses on the development of the child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. It is defined by six trans-disciplinary themes of global significance.

MYP

The MYP for 11-16 year olds provides a framework of learning that encourages students to be creative critical and reflective thinkers. The teachers have to structure the assessment tools in accordance with the guidelines given by the IBO

IB Diploma

The IB Diploma programme is a balanced and challenging programme with final exams that prepare student for university studies. The IB Diploma students have to choose one subject from each of five groups ( best language, second language(s),social sciences, experimental sciences and mathematics). Besides, they have to choose an arts subject from group 6 or a second subject from groups 1-5. Also, the students have to inquire into the nature of knowing by studying ‘theory of knowledge’, complete a certain amount of Creative Action and Service (CAS) and undertake a major research assignment or extended Essay (EE).

IBCC

This newest programme is an innovative and unique framework meant for 16-19 year olds who wish to engage in career-related earning.

School Authorization process

Schools interested in becoming the IB world schools have to complete the authorization process successfully, which lasts for two to three years. During this process the IBO supports the candidate school in building pragmatic understanding and organizational structures. There are already 107 IB schools in India.
