What is Kabir Jayanti?

Kabir Jayanti is an annual event that is observed in the honour of Sant Kabir Das. Sant Kabir Das was a very renowned saint, poet and social reformer of India who lived during the 15th century. His esteemed works and poems describe the greatness and oneness of the Supreme Being.

When is Kabir Jayanti 2024?

It is celebrated on the ‘Purnima’ (full moon day) during the month of ‘Jyesta’ in the traditional Hindu calendar. This occurrence falls during the months of May-June as per the Gregorian calendar.  Kabir Jayanti commemorates the birth anniversary of such distinguished poet and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour in whole of India as well as abroad.

Rituals during Kabir Jayanti:

On the occasion of Kabir Jayanti, the followers of this great saint dedicate the day completely in his remembrance. On this day they recite poems of Sant Kabir Das and take lessons from his teachings.

Various meetings and satsangs are held in different places. Sant Kabir Das is still alive in the heart of his followers or devotees who follow his sermons in his poems and two-line couplets known as ‘Kabir ke Dohe’.

On Kabir Jayanti this day is elaborately celebrated in Varanasi, his birthplace. Religious sermons are held at Kabirchaura Mutt where religious and spiritual leaders preach his teachings to the common man.

Special festivities are observed on Kabir Jayanti at various temples of Kabir in different parts of the country. In some places a procession called as ‘Shobhayatra’ is taken out that culminates at Kabir temple.

Significance of Kabir Jayanti:

According to the legends, Kabir Das was born to Muslim parents in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He turned to spirituality at a very tender age and he called himself as Lord Ram’s as well as Allah’s child.

He did not believe in any religious discrimination and readily accepted all the religions. Sant Kabir Das propagated that there is the presence of same Supreme Being in all religions. Sant Kabir Das was a highly acclaimed poet of his time. His writings significantly influenced the Bhakti movement.

Some of his famous writings include ‘Sakhi Granth’, ‘Anurag Sagar’, ‘Bijak’ and ‘Kabir Granthawali’. A religious community known as ‘Kabir Panth’ was founded by him and the members of this forum are referred as ‘Kabir Panthis’, implying the followers of Kabir Das. He was admired by individual of all faiths and his teachings are still alive and passed from generations.
