Magh Snan

Magh Snan is an auspicious bathing ritual that is performed in the ‘Magh’ month of the traditional Hindu calendar. This ritualistic bath begins from the ‘Amavasya’ (No moon day) of the ‘Puashya’ month until the last day of month of ‘Magh’. Hindu devotees perform Magh Snan in the sanctified rivers like Ganga, Narmada, Yamuna, Krishna, Brahmaputra, Cauvery and Godavari to name a few. Of these, the Sangam at Allahabad or Prayag, which is the confluence of Rivers Ganga, Saraswati and Yamuna is the most beneficial. Thousands of devotees from each and every corner of the country, visit this place to perform snan in the Magh month. It is believed that performing the Magh Snan ritual frees from all the sins and provides salvation.

Rituals during Magh Snan:

• For the Magh Snan ritual devotees get up early. It is considered that the time just before sunrise is most auspicious for performing the Magh Snan ritual. It is observed by everyone, irrespective of their caste, creed or religion. Vedic mantras are recited at the time of performing the Magh Snan. Staunch Hindu devotees perform this sacred bath for the entire period while most of people observe it on important days.
• Devotees worship Surya Bhagwan, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Saraswati while performing the snan in the month of Magh.
• Some devotees also keep fast during this time. After the snan ritual one must perform havans, charities, donations and other auspicious activities. Even those who do not fast should eat only Saatvik food. Consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol is strictly forbidden during this time.
• During the Magh month observing Kalpvas is also very important. Living near the Triveni Sangam during the month of Magh is called as Kalpvas.
• During the Magh Snan ritual reading religious books like ‘Aditya Hridayam’ and ‘Vishnu Sahasranaam’ is considered very propitious.
• The grand Magh Mela is also held during this time. Plenty of traditional and religious activities are organized during the Magh Snan fair. This event attracts lakh of devotees from all over the country.

Significance of Magh Snan:

The greatness of Magh Snan is written in several Hindu religious scriptures like ‘Brahma Purana’ and ‘Vayu Purana’. These Puranas also describe the place, time and rituals to be observed during this punya Snan. Although the snan ceremony is observed on all days of the Magh month, there are specific days like ‘Amavasya’, ‘Ekadashi’, ‘Panchami’, ‘Sankranti’, ‘Saptami’ and ‘Purnima’ that are even more rewarding. These specific days are referred as ‘Magh Amavasya’, ‘Bhisma Ekadashi Snan’, ‘Basant Panchami Snan’, ‘Makar Sankranti’, ‘Ratha Saptami Snan’ and ‘Magh Purnima’ respectively. Also according to the astrological calculations, performing the bathing ritual when the Sun transits into Makar Rashi (Capricorn Zodiac sign), is believed to be highly meritorious. It is a popular belief that a person who observes Magh Snan religiously at the time of sunrise is even worshipped by Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The benefits of Magh Snan are equivalent to performing over 10000 Ashwamedh Yagya.
