In Vedic Astrology, the influence of the Navagrahas, nine planets, not only influences the house they occupy but also has the power to interact with the rays of the other planets and nullify or enhance the other planet's positive or negative effects. This interaction between planets is basically called Sambandha, which, in Sanskrit, literally means relation. Sometimes, it is also called Grah Maitri, which translates to Planetary Friendships.
There are three types of Sambandha, Maitri or Relationships that a planet exhibits.
- Naisargika Maitri (Natural Relationship)
- Tatkaala Maitri (Temporary Relationship)
- Panchadha Maitri (Compound Relationship)
Naisargika Maitri:
The Natural Relationship of a planet, known as Naisargika Maitri, is determined by its placement in the Birth Chart. From the Mootrikona sign of a planet, the lords of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, and 12th houses are regarded as the planet's friends, while the lords of the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, and 11th houses are considered its enemies. However, the planet's exaltation sign's lord is deemed a friendly planet, even if it owns houses categorized as enemies. Moreover, if a planet happens to own both friendly and inimical signs simultaneously, it is considered neutral. Special considerations apply to the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu as they do not have lordship over any signs. In the case of Rahu, it forms friendships with Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn, while considering Sun, Moon, and Mars as its enemies; Mercury is neutral. On the other hand, Ketu sees the Sun and Moon as its enemies, forms friendships with Mars, Venus, and Saturn, and views Mercury and Jupiter as neutral.
Naisargika Maitri:

Sun | friend | -- | neutral | enemy | friend | friend | enemy |

Mars | friend | friend | enemy | neutral | -- | friend | neutral |
Jupiter | friend | friend | enemy | enemy | friend | -- | neutral |

Tatkaala Maitri:
Tatkala Maitri, also known as Temporary Relationship, is determined by the relative positions of planets in the birth chart. When planets are positioned together in the 4th and 10th houses, or in the 3rd and 11th houses, or in the 2nd and 12th houses, they establish a temporary friendship. Conversely, if they do not share these specific positional combinations, a temporary enmity arises between them.
Panchada Maitri:
The compound relationship of planets, considered by the assessment of both Naisargika Maitri and Tatkaala Maitri, is referred to as Panchada Maitri or the Five-fold relationship.
The classifications for Panchada Maitri based on the relationship of the planets in Naisargika Maitri and Tatkaala Maitri are as follows:
- Extreme Friend: When the planets exhibit a friendly connection in both charts.
- Friend: When the planets are friendly in one chart and neutral in the other.
- Neutral: When the planets are friendly in one chart and enemies in the other.
- Enemy: When the planets are enemies in one chart and neutral in the other.
- Extreme Enemy: When the planets are enemies in both charts.
