Purnima in May 2024 falls in the Hindu calendar month of Vaisakh and is one of the most important full moons of the year. Vaisakh purnima is celebrated as Buddha Purnima, the birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha. Tamil hindus celebrate this day as Chitra Pournami as it falls in Chithirai month of Tamil calendar.Purnima also spelled Poornima is a Sanskrit name that means “full moon”. It is the time when the Moon is fully illuminated and is at its brightest. Purnima comes on the 15th tithi of the bright half (Shukla paksh or waxing phase) of the lunar fortnight. The end of Purnima tithi marks the begining of 15 days of Krishna paksha (waning) phase of the Moon and also the beginning of the new month (with Pradipada tithi) in the purnimanta system of Hindu lunar calendar.
