Sindhara Dooj is a Hindu festival that is celebrated on the ‘dwitiya’ (2nd day) during the ‘Shukla Paksha’ (the bright fortnight of moon) in the ‘Shravan’ month of the traditional Hindu calendar. It falls during the auspicious Navratri festivities and is the day before the observance of ‘Hariyali Teej’. In the Gregorian calendar, Sindhara Dooj festival falls during the months of mid-July to mid-August. As per the Hindi calendars and Panchangs, this day is considered to be very propitious and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour in the northern states of India. Sindhara Dooj is essentially a festival for women, in which they shower gifts on each other. It is also known by other names like ‘Sowbhagya Dooj’, ‘Preethi Dwitiya’, ‘Sthanya Vriddhi’ or ‘Gauri Dwitiya’.

Rituals during Sindhara Dooj:

  • On the occasion of Sindhara Dooj, women dress up in their traditional clothes and wear their best ornaments. They purchase new matching bangles on this day and also gift each other. Both married and unmarried women apply mehendi in their hands and feet.
  • Swings are another highlight of this festival. On the day of Sindhara Dooj, several swings are tied to the trees. Women enjoy sitting on these swings in the evening and sing and dance to traditional folk songs.
  • On Sindhara Dooj there is a tradition of gifting presents to daughter-in-laws by their mother-in-law. A day before, daughter-in-laws visit their parent’s home along with the gifts and sweets received. They stay there for a day and return the following evening with her ‘baya’ that comprises of more sweets, fruits, delicacies and a token of money, which is gifted by her mother.
  • In the evening, puja of ‘Gaur Mata’ (an incarnation of Goddess Parvati) is performed with full devotion. Women worship the idol of the Goddess and make several offerings as dhoop, lamp, rice, flowers and sweets. After the puja, the daughter-in-laws must present the ‘baya’ to their respective mother-in-law.
  • In some places in Northern India, devotees also worship ‘Brahmacharini Navdurga Mata’ and ‘Tara Dasamahavidya’ on Sindhara Dooj. In the temples of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, Maheswari Saptamatrika’ puja is performed on this day, while in few temples, people observe the ‘Balatripura Sundari’ puja.
