Winter Solstice is one festival that is celebrated with of pomp in the month of December, in the Northern Hemisphere.

Many people are not fond of the day, as the day is very shortest and the night happens to be longest time of the year.

What is Winter Solstice?

This is the day that winter starts in the northern hemisphere.

Another highlight of this day is that – it is noted to be have the shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere; whereas it has the Longest day in the Southern Hemisphere.

Why is this day so special?

Such a solstice will take place just once in every 365 days or rather in a year.

The day takes shape only once in both the hemisphere: Northern and Southern Hemisphere.

That is what makes the day so very unique.

The term Solstice came from two Latin words and these are 'Sol' and also 'Sistere'.

Sol means the Sun and Sistere means a standstill position.

Significance of the Winter Solstice

On this day, which as mentioned before, happens to be the shortest day of the year. The sun will be positioned at the southern position in the Northern Hemisphere, just above the Tropic of Capricorn.

In the Southern Hemisphere, this day will have the longest day in the South.

The world will see a full moon on this day.

In 2018, the Winter Solstice will appear between December 21 and December 22.

It can be seen at about 5:23 pm on December 21st, 2018 in Canada, US, and also Latin America.

For India, it can be seen at about 3:35 a.m. on December 22nd, 2018
