Valentine’s Day – 14 February 2024

Adorned with showers of rose petals, paper hearts, balloons, teddy bears, chocolates, cakes, and elaborate dates, Valentine’s Day transforms the streets into a dreamy landscape painted in hues of pink and red. Over the years, the traditions of exchanging gifts and composing letters brimming with declarations of love on February 14th have evolved, acquiring heightened glamour, enthusiasm, and anticipation.

The inception of Valentine’s Day traces its roots to centuries, during the period of antiquity predating the establishment of America. In ancient Rome, an observance known as Lupercalia, which translates to “feasts of Lupercus” was practiced. As integral components of the festivities, individuals engaged in prolonged feasting, dancing, and various games.

The celebration of Lupercalia endured for numerous centuries until the advent of Christianity in Rome. Despite the Romans relinquishing their belief in the deity Lupercus, there was a notable reluctance to abandon the celebration of Lupercalia. Consequently, the festival persisted under the name of St. Valentine, a Roman priest who had died on February 14th.

In due course, February 14th evolved into the commemoration of St. Valentine’s Day. Over time, the observances associated with Valentine’s Day gained popularity in both France and England.

Valentine’s Day is a one-day celebration, but the festivities commence a week in advance, starting on February 7th. Each day during Valentine’s week is designated with a specific theme, starting from Rose Day and concluding with Valentine’s Day.

May Valentine’s Day be a celebration that extends beyond romantic union, embracing love among friends and family alike. In the contemporary era, it is remarkable how every manifestation of love is recognized and appreciated. May the expressions of affection bring joy and warmth to all.
