Maharishi Parashar, the author of the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, one of the most authoritative texts on Vedic Astrology, describes various types of planetary Dasha periods. The sage explains Dashas such as Ashtottari, Shodsottari, Panchottari, etc., emphasising that the Vimshottari Dasha is the most suitable for the people in the Kaliyuga era. He affirms that the Vimshottari Dasha spans 120 years, aligning with the expected lifespan of people in the Kaliyuga period, which makes it the best one to use for the current era.
In Vedic Astrology, the Dasha Period of a planet influences the individual either positively or negatively based on the planet's dignity in the birth chart. If the planet is considered malefic in the native's Janam Kundali, its Dasha period is believed to bring unfavourable outcomes. Conversely, if the planet is considered benefic, the Dasha period is expected to be favorable.
The Mahadasha represents the major period of a planet, with each planet having its specified duration. This Mahadasha can be broken down into Antardasha, further into Pratyantardasha, and so forth. The Mahadasha of Moon lasts for 10 years, the Sun's for 6, Mercury's for 17, Venus's for 20, Mars's for 7, Jupiter's for 16, Saturn's for 19, Rahu's for 18, and Ketu's for 7 years. When combined together, these periods total 120 years.
By meticulously examining an individual's horoscope and the Vimshottari Dasha, an astrologer can offer predictions and insights into momentous events that are likely to unfold during the native's lifetime. This foresight allows the individual to prepare for the upcoming events, be they positive or negative, and navigate through their life with a better understanding of the potential challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
